What Is a Central Air Conditioning System?

Managing your home’s HVAC can be complicated, especially if you’re not used to doing so. Renters often rely on their landlords to handle heating and cooling issues, so new homeowners often don’t know much about the pros and cons of their various options. One choice you’ll need to make is about what type of air conditioning system you want in your home or apartment. Central air conditioning and mini-split systems can both be effective, but you need to figure out which is the best fit for your needs. If you need more information on your options, read on to find out what a central air conditioning system is.

What is a central air conditioning system, and how does it work?

It can be difficult to decide between a central air conditioning system and ductless mini-split air conditioning. When an HVAC system uses central air conditioning, the air is cooled in a central location and then distributed to other rooms via fans or ductwork. In a mini-split system, the blower and evaporator are used to pull in warm air and blow out cold air directly into the room where the unit is located.

There are several things you should consider when deciding what type of air conditioning system is right for you. Ductless systems are typically more energy-efficient, which is a priority for many homeowners. They can also make it easier to accommodate home zoning. However, if your home is larger than 2,000 square feet, you should opt for central air conditioning. A mini-split system often lacks the power and efficiency to reliably cool a space of that size.

No matter what type of HVAC you have, it’s essential that you maintain it properly. Preventive maintenance is the best way to avoid a costly breakdown and extend the life span of your system. You should have an HVAC technician perform an inspection at least once per year. The filter should also be changed at least every 90 days, though some homeowners prefer to change it more frequently than that.

How else can you stay cool at home?

If you care about temperature control at home, a smart thermostat can make a noticeable difference in your day-to-day life. A smart thermostat is a Wi-Fi-enabled device that can be used for home automation and is often able to be controlled by your smartphone. Anyone with an HVAC system that is compatible with a smart thermostat should consider investing in one since it provides considerable benefits to homeowners. Not only does it give you the tools you need to keep your home at your ideal temperature, but it can also adjust your HVAC’s settings to conserve energy automatically, which will save you money on your energy costs.

Additionally, there are smaller changes you can make to maintain your preferred temperature at home. For example, you should regularly check on the condition of your windows and doors. Cracks and crevices can let in outdoor air, which can affect the indoor temperature. This can also increase your utility bills by forcing your air conditioning system to work harder to compensate for the change. Long curtains or drapes can also provide an extra layer of insulation. On sunny days, blackout curtains can also keep the sun from making your home uncomfortably hot.

There are a lot of things to take into consideration when deciding how you want to heat and cool your home. The type of air conditioning system you use will make a big difference in your overall comfort and quality of life, so it’s worth taking the time to research your options before making a decision. You can also reach out to an HVAC professional to discuss any questions or concerns that you have before HVAC installation so they can provide expert advice. Ultimately, the right system for you is the one that is most suited to address your specific needs.
