THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CAVES IN VIETNAM
Sapo: Vietnam has emerged as a famous world tourist destination not only because of its rich history and culture but also because of its pleasant weather and stunning landscapes. In particular, thanks to the country’s unique geomorphology, there are many breathtaking and majestic caves in Vietnam.
1 – Son Doong Cave – top biggest caves in Vietnam
Known globally as the largest natural cave in the world, Son Doong Cave belongs to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park in Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province. Since 2013, Son Doong Cave has been exploited in the form of adventure tourism by Oxalis Adventure Company, a unit licensed by the Quang Binh Provincial government. The time and number of visitors to the cave are limited, only from January to August each year with a maximum of 1000 people per year.
This giant cave in Vietnam has a length of nearly 9km, a height of up to 200m in some places, and a width of 160m, with an estimated capacity of nearly 40 million cubic meters. You can find here a mysterious and majestic world, with dense trees like a tropical forest, an underground river, stalactite columns up to 70 m high, corals and fossil animal remains. With an age of about 3 million years, the formation of Son Doong cave is quite young compared to the limestone mountain system formed 400 to 450 million years ago in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.

2 – Phong Nha Cave – one of the most famous caves in Vietnam
Recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage, Phong Nha Cave is the most representative scenic spot in the cave complex of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. According to our Vietnam travel tips, the dry season (April – August) is the best time to visit due to the pleasant temperature, along with the fact that in the rainy season, the water of the Son River will rise and cover the cave entrance. Currently, to enter Phong Nha Cave, you will have to take a boat along the Son River from the Phong Nha tourist center, operating from 7:30 am to 5 pm.
Entering this Vietnam cave through the cave door with a width of 20 – 25m and a height of 10m, you will encounter many millions-year-old stalactites and stalagmites with strange shapes such as Lion, Buddha, etc. It is these things that have given Phong Nha cave two titles of “the highest and widest cave entrance” and “the most magnificent stalactite system”, parts of a total of 7 “best” criteria that this cave has achieved. The remaining 5 include the longest underground river; most beautiful underground lake; most beautiful and largest sandy beaches and reefs; widest and most beautiful dry cave; longest water cave in Vietnam.
– Entrance fee: 150,000 VND / person / ticket ($6.6)
– Boat: 550,000 VND / boat / 12 people ($24.2)
3 – En Cave
As another cave in the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, En Cave is also honored as the third largest cave in the world. Unlike most caves in Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, this cave doesn’t require traveling by boat so you can visit it easily, particularly from mid-December to September next year. However, there are streams and an underground river, so for your safety, it is best to explore in the dry season (April – August) because the water level is low.
This is also one of the Vietnamese caves that have its own climate, creating a different world of pristine waters, sandy beaches, unspoiled jungle, and various kinds of flowers. Coming to Hang En, you will have the opportunity to see with your own eyes the habitat, behavior, and activities of the swallows residing in the caves. With a length of more than 1.6km, En Cave has 3 entrances, of which the largest and most famous one is 120m high and 140m wide, leading to a dome of up to 100m high and more than 180m wide.
4 – Thien Duong Cave – one of the best dry caves in Vietnam
Located in the heart of a limestone mountain range surrounded by pristine primeval forests, Thien Duong Cave (another name: Paradise Cave) is a dry cave in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. The temperature of the cave is always about 15°C lower than outdoors, so the air in the cave is extremely cool and refreshing all year round. Thien Duong Cave has now been developed for tourism with the construction of a solid entrance, steps, and road inside the cave.
The structure of this cave in Vietnam is magnificent and majestic, with a length of more than 31.4 km, a height of about 60 – 80m, and a width of 30 – 100m (the widest place up to 150m). The name “paradise” comes from the beauty of the magical stalactites and stalagmites in the cave, with many different shapes, some of which are similar to cultural symbols of regions of Vietnam.
– Entrance fee: 250,000 VND / adult ($11) & 125,000 VND / child ($5.5)
5 – Sung Sot Cave – one of the most majestic caves in Vietnam
Sung Sot Cave or Surprising Cave is located on Bo Hon Island – the largest island in the center of Halong Bay – a world heritage site voted by UNESCO. This is also a stop on the sightseeing route 2 of the Halong Bay tour, so you need to buy a ticket for this route to be able to visit Sung Sot Cave. April – June every year is the time when the weather is beautiful, sunny and not too many tourists, the most ideal time to travel here.
The stone steps climbing up to Sung Sot Cave lie under the forest foliage and vast blue sky. With an area of nearly 12,200m2 and a height of about 30m, the cave has a majestic structure, filled with stalactites and stalagmites of strange shapes, some of which are related to Saint Giong – one of the four immortals of Vietnam.
