Are you planning to start a remote job in the near future? Or have you been working from home for a while, and getting tired of working in the kitchen or from the couch?

To take work seriously when working from home, you need a dedicated home office. It’s too hard to be productive in your bed or on your dinner table, surrounded by distraction.

The good news is that setting up a home office for remote work is fun. You get to stay home, not waste time commuting and enjoy the comfort of your own home.

But for a productive environment, and a long-lasting remote work career, you need to be intentional about setting up an office in your house or apartment. Keep reading for the most important tips when creating an office space.

The Office Space

Wondering how to set up an office? First and foremost, you need a place to put your home office.

If you are lucky, you have a spare bedroom that you can outfit with your work gear. If not, you have to get creative. You might be able to use a corner of your living space, workout room, or even bedroom. You can get a simple room divider to section off your office.

Alternatively, if you have any spare walk-in closets, you could use that as well. Effective home office design makes the most of what is available. Setting up near a window helps, as sunlight works to boost motivation throughout the day.

The Basics

Once you’ve got your office space set aside, it’s time to add the basics. This includes your desk or table, ultra-comfortable chair, and some storage.

For a desk, invest in an adjustable standup desk. Everyone knows that too much sitting every day is bad for our health. But too much standing can be equally as uncomfortable. The best approach is meeting in the middle, able to switch between sitting and standing at a moment’s notice.

And for those hours when you are sitting, it’s vital that you buy a quality chair. You’re going to need to try a few out to see what jives with your body. You want something that fits your height and offers the support you need. Don’t skimp on a chair, as it’s vital to your health and productivity.

Lastly, you’ll want some type of storage and organization in your office. Though your supplies might be few when working remotely, you’ll still want to keep things clean. A storage hutch is a functional way to add separate storage or combine storage compartments with your desk.

The Tech

You probably already have a computer or laptop for remote work. If not, invest in a quality laptop. You want something portable so you can work from home, a coffee shop, or the office with ease.

The best home office will also include an external monitor, making it easy and enjoyable to use a laptop at home. If you’re going all out, you can also get a Bluetooth keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse for ultimate flexibility and comfort at your desk.

Setting Up a Home Office for Remote Work Is Key to Success

What separates remote work from in-office work? A few things, but primarily the environment.

And setting up a home office for remote work can either make or break your ability to succeed at working remotely. You need a productive environment. You owe it to yourself, your employer, and your career to invest in a quality home setup.
