In every internet post explaining how homeowners can easily increase their home’s value, you are bound to find repainting the home’s interior and exterior as one of the options. But what you don’t find in most of these articles are explanations about what colors homeowners should paint their homes.

Homeowners instinctively understand why repainting a home can improve its value. What they may not find easy is deciding the best colors to choose for their property. But Draper Realty Management advises choosing a home’s colors may be even more important than repainting the home.

The reason for this is that trends in home colors are constantly changing. While some colors make a home more appealing to buyers, others make it look antiquated and unattractive. The wrong choice of colors can undo all the good work an owner does repainting their property.

A home’s colors are the first thing that registers in visitor’s minds. Colors stick in the mind and they are the characteristics of a home that people recall the most. The colors of a house can make internet users stop and take a second look at images of the property.

When used properly, colors can be a tool for emphasizing or deemphasizing the various features of a home. Homeowners who do not give enough thought to the colors they use in their homes are denying themselves the full benefits of repainting their homes.

The best paint colors to improve a home’s value

Below, we share the trending colors homeowners can use to maximize the appeal of their property.

The exterior

Homeowners must put their best foot forward when choosing paint colors for the exterior of a home that is about to be sold. Exterior paint allows an owner to maximize the home’s curb appeal. But before choosing the colors for the home’s exterior, remember this rule: never use more than three colors.

The colors that improve the home’s exterior the most are greige (a blend of beige and light gray), grays, blues, and greens. The colors to stay away from are tan and beige.

Front door

The front door is a major focal point in a home’s exterior because people have to pass through it to get into the home. It has to be both welcoming and eye-catching. Colors that work well for doors and also complement a greige exterior are charcoal, navy blue, black and dark gray.

For homeowners who think these colors are boring and would like to something bold that makes a stronger statement, rich green, classic red and deep plum are additional options.

Kitchen

Kitchens are reputed to be the room that is most important in influencing buyers’ decision to buy a home. A kitchen’s colors are very important because people spend a considerable amount of time in the kitchen; preparing meals, making conversation, or eating.

There was a time when red and yellow were the dominant colors kitchens were painted in but this has changed. Current trends point to using shades from light blue to a gray-blue color. Grays and mild blues are more calming and also stimulate the appetite.

Bathroom

The bathroom is another room that is highly influential in the buyer’s decision to buy a home. In this regard, bathrooms rank second only to a home’s kitchen. Homebuyers want a bathroom that they can spend time in and which conveys a sense of luxury. The most desirable colors to use in a kitchen are currently purplish-blue hues like powder blue and periwinkle. Blue bathrooms add lots of value to a home, but the colors have to be in the lighter shades.

Bedroom

The primary mood people want to dominate their bedroom is quietness. At the end of the day, family members just want to get into their rooms, wind down, and sleep. The colors in the room . This is why cooler colors like soft cerulean and cadet blue are very attractive in bedrooms. Homes with bedrooms in these color shades tend to sell for more.

Living Room

Living room colors should be appealing to a wide range of people, including the people who live in a home, as well as, visitors. Colors that make a room feel more spacious, brighter, and which do not feel loud or overpowering are preferred.

The colors of the living room should also draw people into a conversational mood. The colors that do these best are oatmeal, pale taupe, light beige, light browns, and other neutrals. Painting a living room in these colors will improve the overall appeal of the home.

Dining rooms and hallways

Bluesy shades from slate blue to pale gray-blue work very well in the dining room. They are soothing and ideal for the light conversations that dominate meal times. Also, if the dining room has rustic wood décor, navy blue may also work in the space. For the hallways, stick with neutral tones to create a seamless blend with the connecting rooms. Blues are usually the best colors to use for this purpose.

And that is it for the best paint colors that increase a home’s value. Have fun renovating your home. And good luck.
