How to Keep Kids Safe around Your Garage Doors

Kids and children love to have fun and run here and there, especially when they are younger than 10. While it is nice for them to be active and remain joyful, their hyperactivity can be dangerous as well, particularly among garage doors.

It is important to remember that your garage door is the heaviest and largest object in your house. Since it is one of the moving objects as well, chances are that the kids in your house can be subject to danger if they move around the garage door a lot.

Rid yourself of the stress and follow these FIVE ways to keep your kids safe around garage doors.

  1. Keep the remotes far away from the kids

It is common knowledge that children sure love playing with buttons, and they will push the buttons on the garage door’s remote the first chance they get.

A simple fix: keep the remote away from the reach of the kids.

  1. Ensure your sensors are working fine

Automatic garage doors come with an auto-reversing feature, which makes use of a photoelectric eye to sense if something is blocking the door while it is closing.

It is imperative that you check this feature on a daily basis to examine if the sensor is working fine.

  1. Teach the kids to avoid hitching rides

Another activity that kids sure love is hitching rides on one object or the other. Hitching rides on a garage door can be quite dangerous, as can be to play around with it all the time.

Therefore, teach your kids to avoid playing near the garage door or using it as an object for amusement. These little plays take only a while to transition into serious injuries.

  1. Do not leave the door open

Leaving the garage door open can be dangerous for your children as they will get access to all the tools and chemicals you must have stored in the garage. Check the door to see if it is properly closed every time you leave, as this can help in preventing entry of strangers as well.

  1. Maintain the door regularly

A damaged and broken door can pose a health hazard to kids, pets and adults alike! Inspect your door on a regular basis to see if there are any damaged parts that need repairs.

Ignoring the little signs of damage on your door can cause some very difficult situations in the future, both in terms of injuries and repair work later on.
