7 Things to Do Before You Move

Moving to a new place comes with its own set of challenges. Although exciting, preparing for your move is, undoubtedly, far from easy. Whether you’re shifting within the same state, to another city, or to a different country, the process can be both physically and mentally taxing.

Packing your belongings, transporting them to the new place, and handling all the other details is far from simple. Everything demands meticulous planning and organization to ensure a smooth moving day, especially if you are moving from or within a busy state like New Hampshire, which experiences one of the largest migration gains. To make your move as trouble-free as possible, we recommend having a reliable moving company by your side.

If the prospect of your move preparations seems jarring, worry not. Take a breather and make a detailed checklist. To get you started with your moving journey, here are some things you should do before your big move:

  1. Get a Self-Storage Unit

Relocating from one place to another can bring about significant stress, especially when there’s a gap in the timeline between moving out of your old place and moving into the new one. While you could choose to wait in a hotel or stay with a friend during this interim period, transporting all your belongings from place to place can be quite challenging. To make it easy for yourself, it’s essential to find a temporary home for your cherished possessions until you’re ready to settle into your new location, and this is where self-storage units can be incredibly beneficial. A trustworthy self-storage company can go a long way in making your move go smoothly.

Towns like Hillsboro, New Hampshire, which are nestled amidst forests, rolling hills, and beautiful countryside, are popular choices for individuals looking to move to peaceful locations. If you plan to relocate to Hillsboro, we advise you to find one of the safe and reputable Hillsboro self storage facilities before the big move.

Having access to a self-storage unit will allow you to store all your belongings until your official moving day. You can even begin packing and storing items in your booked unit as soon as you initiate the moving process. This way, you won’t have to clutter your current home with numerous brown boxes until the big move, avoiding the overwhelming logistics of handling everything at once. Opting for storage units and moving your possessions gradually over time can make the transition between homes much more convenient and stress-free.

  1. Declutter

Simplify your moving process by parting ways with unused items. Discard anything that has no value left, sell items that are still valuable but unnecessary for you, and consider donating whatever you can. Streamlining your belongings through decluttering will significantly lighten the burden of packing and moving, which is often the most challenging aspect of the entire process. Keeping items with no purpose in your new home only adds unnecessary weight.

  1. Hand a Notice to Your Landlord

Make sure to inform your landlord of your move within the usual one-to-two-month timeline. Your landlord must be among the first people to know about your plans, so avoid delaying the conversation. According to rental agreements and local laws, tenants must provide written notice to their landlord before moving out of their homes. If you fail to provide proper notice, you may have to pay a penalty fee or say goodbye to your security deposit.

So plan a walk-through to assess the condition of your place, discuss the return of your deposit, clear any outstanding debts, and handle these tasks promptly.

  1. Schedule Utility Cancellations and Setups

Several essential services, such as electricity, gas, water, and internet, will require cancellation at your old location and connections at your new one. It’s important to contact all your utility providers and notify them about your moving plans to avoid any misdelivery of your final month’s bills. Additionally, consider checking if your current providers can transfer the utilities to your new place before your move-in date. If not, you may have to start searching for new providers beforehand to not add to the never-ending to-do list of your after-move days and, of course, the stress that comes with it.

  1. Notify Others About the Address Change

While your friends and family will naturally be aware of your move, you will still need to inform a wide range of other parties about your relocation. Tax agencies, insurance providers, banks, your workplace, online shopping sites, subscription services, etc. The list of parties to notify when you relocate is rather extensive but crucial.

  1. Use the Food at Home

Packing your groceries has to be one of the most necessary steps of a move. Starting from the week before your official move, focus on consuming the perishable items in your fridge rather than adding more groceries to the kitchen. It’s best not to overload your fridge before moving day to avoid further stress about the packing arrangements. While you can certainly pack everything in a cooler and transport it to your new place, it’s an added hassle you can do without.

Use this time as an opportunity to test your culinary skills by creating delicious meals with the ingredients you have available. If you manage to clear out your fridge before moving day, purchase groceries in smaller quantities to avoid the trouble of taking them with you or, worse, wasting them. Once you have moved to your new place, you can always run to your nearest grocery store and stack anew.

  1. Don’t Tire Yourself Out

Moving can be a complex process, so it’s essential not to let a busy schedule become an added source of stress before you finally move. To ensure a smooth relocation, consider requesting a few days off from work to organize all your moving affairs. By keeping your agenda relatively clear, you’ll have more time to plan and execute your move without any complications.

If taking time off work isn’t possible, try scheduling your moving day on the weekend. You will need to be present in person to oversee the transition from your old place to the new one so that everything goes smoothly.

Conclusion

Relocating to a new area signifies the beginning of a new phase in your life, an opportunity for a fresh start in an unfamiliar place with a new home and neighbors. Although the process can be demanding, rather than succumbing to stress, embrace the excitement for what lies ahead. Remember to take a breather and relax between tasks. Don’t exhaust yourself by doing everything at once.

It’s essential to give yourself some time to unwind. Your well-being is ultimately the most important part of the entire process. You need to be in top-notch health on the move day for everything to work out smoothly.
