Putting off roof repair?
Don’t worry, we all do it. It’s a big job and it always seems like it can wait until next year until suddenly it can’t.
If you’re unsure whether it’s urgent, there are five signs that indicate you can’t hold out any longer for a roof repair.
-
Visible Sagging
If you can notice any sagging in your roof anywhere, you should get it inspected. Often, a sagging roof is followed by leaks. As an even worst-case scenario, a sagging roof may also indicate structural issues or problems with foundation supports.
It may not be an immediate issue, but it’s well worth calling residential roofing services and getting it checked out as soon as possible to minimize damage and ensure your safety.
-
Cracked Shingles
Cracked shingles are a good indicator that your roof needs repair. It may be weather-related or it could indicate that the entire roof is nearing the end of its life.
Though one cracked shingle might not seem like an immediate problem, it can be. When shingles crack, water can travel down between them and cause damage beneath the roof.
-
Missing Shingles
Similar to above, missing shingles indicate it’s time for a repair as a minimum. Leaving the layer beneath the shingles exposed to the elements is sure to cause more damage to your roof. So if you see missing shingles, you need a roof repair at a minimum.
However, if you have missing shingles and your roof is already quite old and worn, it may be worth contemplating a full roof replacement.
-
Algae and Moss
A little algae and moss is normal on a roof. It’s exposed to the weather and will naturally collect debris which makes a lovely home for lichen to grow on. You’ll find more lichen on areas of your roof that get less sunlight.
Lichen can be cleaned off of most roofs. Tile roofs can be power washed, but asphalt shingle roofs cannot. You should get your roof cleaned regularly as clearing off lichen helps improve water drainage.
-
More Than 25 Years Old
The National Association of Homebuilders says you can expect asphalt shingle roofs to last around 20 years. While fiber cement shingle roofs are expected to last around 25 years. If you have either type of roof and it’s over 25 years old, there’s a good chance it needs replacing.
Meanwhile, tile, copper, and slate roofs can last more than 50 years. While wood shake roofs can last for around 30.
Of course, the climate has a huge impact on all of these estimates. If you live in a colder state with more snow and hail, or a state prone to hurricanes, these lifespans can be cut down a considerable amount.
It’s well worth getting a roof replacement quote if your roof is hitting the retirement age. We’d suggest using a reputable company like Ragsdale Roofing And Innovations LLC.
