Woodturning is a hobby that has been enjoyed by many people for centuries. Many people find woodturning to be an enjoyable way to spend their free time, while others enjoy it as a profession.

If you are just beginning your journey into this wonderful world of crafting and carpentry, the first thing you will need is some basic tools. In this blog post, we will discuss 5 must-have woodturning tools that can help beginners get started!

1. Band Saw

A band saw cuts a piece of wood by placing it on the table and running either a very sharp blade or wire across it. A band saw may be used in many different projects both for small pieces as well as large ones, making them a great addition to any workshop whether you are just starting out with woodturning or have been doing so for years!

The main function of the bandsaw is cutting materials that can’t be cut easily using other means (this includes metal). It’s also possible to use this type of machine for end-grain work. Finally, one might even use this tool when they need to make rough cuts – if you want your material at least somewhat smooth afterward there will probably still be some sanding required.

2. Wood Lathe

Wood lathes are highly versatile machines that can be used for a myriad of woodworking tasks. One such task is turning pieces on end to create bowls or other vessels. The piece being turned must be mounted between centers, which are two posts with screws on the top and bottom that hold it in place while the work is done.

This type of machine has been around since before 1850 when it was patented by Thomas Blanchard and its popularity continues today due to its usefulness as well as the fact that there have been many improvements made over time!

3. Hand Planes

Palm planes are handheld power tools that work like an electric plane for woodturning. The operator uses the tool to remove small amounts of material from a piece at a time. After some practice with using the device on rough stock (pieces not yet shaped), you will be able to use it effectively on any type of project – making your next job easier than ever before.

An automatic palm plane’s discs rotate rapidly in order to generate cutting action which means that they can achieve more surface removal per minute than other types of hand-held planer blades.

4. Chisel Set

A chisel set is a must-have for all woodworkers. A good chisel should be sharp, durable and the right size to fit your hands. Chisels are often used in roughing out a shape from stock or removing large amounts of material quickly with one pass.

The typical sizes you will find in a carpenter’s tool box are ¼”, ½” and ¾”. I typically recommend getting three different sizes – ¼”, ½” and ¾”. Woodturners use these types of tools for making cuts inside bowls and deep mortises that require high precision.

5. Drill with Hole Saw

A drill with a hole saw can be used for woodturning. The process of turning involves drilling holes to create the sculpture and adding detail by then carving it out. A hole saw is often attached to a larger, variable speed power drill and typically has an assortment of cutting blades that can reach up to ten inches in diameter.

The most popular use for this tool is when creating bowls or hollow forms from blocks of hardwoods like oak or maple; however, there are many other uses including furniture-making, art projects, and craftsman carpentry work such as putting handles on drawers.

Conclusion

You will need more tools for doing woodturning according to your wish. But for starting out, these five are essentials and you should start your journey by collecting all of the tools mentioned above.

I understand it may become a burden considering the price of these tools. But if you choose to collect second-hand products instead of brand new ones, you’ll save a handful amount of money.
