Over 137 million Americans are struggling with medical debt. Many of them could have avoided this financial burden had they filed a personal injury claim.

Of course, filing a personal injury claim doesn’t inherently mean that you’ll get the compensation you need to pay off your medical bills. There’s a lot more to the process than just filling out some paperwork.

How can you make sure that you file a personal injury claim and win?

Read on for 5 injury law tips from the best injury attorneys in the country.

1. See a Doctor Immediately

If you’ve been injured as a result of someone else’s negligence, the first thing you need to do is seek medical attention. Not only is this preferable for your health and safety but it’s important to your case.

Insurance companies will try to cut corners and settle low if they can prove that you’re not doing everything you can to recover. Follow your doctor’s orders to a T.

2. Make Your Next Call an Attorney’s Office

Many people assume that they should make the next call to the insurance company. That is incorrect.

Instead, make your next call to a personal injury lawyer. The earlier you bring a lawyer on to your case, the better. Otherwise, your lawyer may have to do some damage control later on down the road.

3. Document Every Detail

Document every detail possible, from the scene of the accident to the injuries themselves. Ask for copies of your medical records and keep all of your medical bills in order throughout this process.

Don’t forget that medical bills aren’t the only thing you can receive compensation for. If you’ve had to reduce your hours or your duties at work due to your injury, make sure to document that, as well. Keep your paystubs in order to establish lost wages and receive compensation for these, as well.

4. Stay Off of Social Media

Insurance companies work with vicious attorneys who will leave no stone unturned. Plenty of personal injury cases have been thrown out because of social media. In most cases, a plaintiff is seen on their social media living their lives in a way that is contradictory to the narrative they’ve created.

Don’t underestimate the defendent’s ability to twist the story. It’s safer to stay off social media altogether than to attempt to self-censor.

5. Don’t Talk to Insurance Reps Without Your Attorney

Whether you’re filing a claim with your own insurance or some else’s, withhold communication until your attorney is present. That means answering questions over the phone, answering emails, signing documents–all of it. The last thing you want is to unintentionally reveal harmful information or sign away your rights.

The Best Injury Attorneys are Here to Help

Don’t get trapped in medical debt if someone else is responsible for your injury. Follow these tips from the best injury attorneys and win the compensation you deserve.
