Milk has been used by humans for centuries. In the present world, milk is used in producing cream, yoghurt, and even butter. On top of production, milk is a nutritious and delicious fluid to consume. People consume milk in the early mornings, during the day, and before sleeping too. This is because of their incredible physical and psychological benefits to humans. Our bones grow stronger and focus grows sharper after drinking milk. Over the years milk has grown to come in many forms. The most famous of which have been fresh milk and powdered milk.

Powdered milk has grown to establish a loyal customer base over time. This is because of the specific benefits that it has over fresh milk. Others stay loyal to fresh milk and prefer it over powdered milk. Both have their pros and cons that cater to different individuals. Fortunately, we have compiled the differences between powdered and fresh milk. Below the differences are presented to help you make an informed decision.

Production

The first difference between the two is the way they are produced. Fresh milk has a more traditional method whereas powdered milk has an industrial one.

Fresh Milk

Cows are milked and the milk produced is placed in containers for a maximum of 48 hours. The milk is to be kept in lower temperatures and transported. Milk is then pasteurized and cleaned. It can then be finished into a product or go through other production processes.

Powdered Milk

Powdered milk goes through the same process up until pasteurization. Afterwards, the milk is to be evaporated. This process is known as spray drying and is done until the milk is in fine particle form. Afterwards, the powder produced is to be placed in a powder filling line. This is where dedicated machines fill in packets or jars of milk powder. It is then shipped to supermarkets to be sold.

Cost

Both fresh milk and powdered milk have different costs. These can be variable yet divide their market into two.

Fresh Milk

Fresh milk is on average more expensive than powdered milk. This is because it is hard to come by and is sold at a premium. Many people regard fresh milk as the gold standard of milk and accept the price as is.

Powdered Milk

Powdered milk has won over many loyal consumers because of its low prices. Powdered milk is usually half the price of fresh milk. This change makes it very attractive to those on a budget. Students and travellers love powdered milk because of its low price. Another great benefit of the lower price is that many restaurants prefer it. Milkshakes are easier and cheaper to produce with powdered milk than fresh milk.

Availability

Another big difference between powdered milk and fresh milk is their availability. Different regions may have variable availability of both of them.

Fresh Milk

Fresh milk is readily available in regions where farms are abundant. Metropolis cities often have a steady supply of fresh milk available too. But, there are many regions where fresh milk is hard to come by. In regions like these, fresh milk may be substituted for other alternatives. The price may also be unnaturally high due to shortage.

Powdered Milk

Powdered milk is generally available in many regions. This is because it is in powder form and not fluid form. Many regions have access to powdered milk yet it may not do well in some regions. Powdered milk may see lower sales in regions where fresh milk is also available. However, it will flourish in regions where fresh milk is too expensive.

Shelf Life And Storability

The shelf life of both types of milk differs greatly. Similarly, how they can be stored matters too.

Fresh Milk

Fresh milk has a generally lower shelf life than powdered milk. That is because fresh milk comes in fluid form and can spoil easily. Supermarkets can only hold milk for a short while before they get expired and lose value. In terms of storage, fresh milk can be kept in bowls, glasses or jugs. They are to be consumed fairly quickly so that the milk doesn’t spoil. Sanitizing glass bottles helps protect milk from spoiling quickly.

Powdered Milk

Powdered milk is known to have a longer shelf life than average. This helps supermarkets keep it for longer periods. Transport over longer distances is also easier as the powdered milk doesn’t spoil. It can be stored in small packets or jars easily. Only a teaspoon or two is needed to add milk and the rest can be stored. This helps consumers to keep it for a longer time.

Conclusion

The main difference that everyone wants to know is how nutritious both of them are and the risks. This is where most people prefer fresh milk over powdered milk for specific reasons.

Fresh milk has natural ingredients and is relatively free from toxins. It brings us profound benefits and has a favourable taste too. But, fresh milk can be detrimental to those who are lactose intolerant. In such cases, consumption of milk should be lessened or alternatives should be sought out.

Powdered milk includes concentrated ingredients after the milk is spray dried. It is difficult to mix the compositions properly and can have diminishing effects. Many consider powdered milk nutritious yet artificial. It is also suitable for those who are lactose intolerant as powdered milk has less lactose.

Many prefer fresh milk due to its better taste and natural nutritional value. Yet, it is entirely personal preference and we hope you make the best decision.
