Whether you are a DIYer at heart or you want to start working on some DIY projects, you’ve got to have the right tools to accomplish anything. We can share useful tools with you all day long but not every person needs every woodworking tool.

If you plan to be prepared for DIY home woodworking projects, there are a few basic tools that you might want to have on hand. These tools are versatile and will cover multiple uses so you can do a variety of projects with no issues.

Here are our recommendations for DIY woodworking tools for your home.

1.  Drill

The number one tool that every woodworker should have on hand is a drill. This is a must for most homes, even if you don’t do a lot of projects. The nice thing is, that drills are affordable and there are so many different options out there to meet your needs.

Power drills are a need that you should always have. Learn how to use it well and then put it to work for you! A drill can make big holes or small holes but it can go beyond just holes and screws.

You can use your drill for twisting wires, impact driving, grinding, mixing paint or other substances, and more.

If you do use your drill for other things besides traditional drill usage, be sure that you are using it properly and that you have the right attachment on it for the task. A lot of drills are made to be multi-functional and there is a bit for just about anything.

2.  Miter Saw

Probably one of our favorite DIY woodworking tools for home is a miter saw. You might also hear this particular saw referred to as a chop saw but it simply makes woodworking simple. The miter saw allows you to make quick cuts and make them cleanly.

If you’re not familiar with the miter saw, it’s a tabletop saw that has a work surface and then a head with a saw blade that raises and lowers to make your cut. If your DIY work is going to have you, cutting boards, it’s a must-have!

The nice thing about the miter saw is that you can do a lot with it. Yes, it is designed for cutting but it doesn’t always have to be simple cuts. You can get fancy or even make cuts on angles and crown molding.

With the overall design, you can cut through a variety of woods and materials, even working with some of the thickest lumber. Depending on your model, it might include a laser guide to help with accuracy.

3.  Circular Saw

We recommend investing in a circular saw as well. You can rip cut and work with boards or cuts that simply aren’t plausible for a miter saw. The circular saw is functional and portable in some ways. It’s not a heavy piece of machinery designed to always sit on a table for operation.

With the circular saw, you can work for long cuts or wide cuts and quickly make the work of the project. They are powerful and the majority of them have a lot of safety features to protect you while you work quickly and efficiently.

This type of saw has different benefits and functions than the miter saw so you won’t feel like you have two saws that are practically the same thing.

4.  Router

DIY lovers should have a router on hand. This tool is pretty unique and interesting and you won’t find a replacement for it with one of your other tools. You may not use it all of the time but you probably will use it some with home DIY projects or renovations.

Routers are typically used for cutting patterns or grooves. You can think of them almost like a jigsaw but they are different. You can do the same pattern over and over on different pieces of wood. They are light in your hand and easy to maneuver.

Some projects that you might find yourself using a router on could include carving designs, creating wood joinery, cutting grooves, cutting edges, cutting custom molding, and more. These can be fun and you don’t have to be advanced in skill to enjoy them.

5.  Clamps

Don’t forget the clamps! It really doesn’t matter what kind of projects you are going to do; you will probably need clamps at some point down the road. Clamps are like a stabilization accessory. There are a lot of different styles and sizes of clamps.

If nothing else, you should definitely get some simple grip clamps but take a look at the various styles to see if anything stands out to you. Clamps will help keep pieces in place while you work so you don’t have to get frustrated when that same piece keeps sliding at the last minute!

We recommend having several sizes. You definitely want more than just one clamp. You can purchase a set or purchase individual pieces.

6.  Sander

Finally, a sander just might save you hours of frustration and pain. So many people sand things by hand and while there are times this is necessary, it takes forever! Why sand everything by hand when you can use a sander for the job?

Sanders basically works by attaching sandpaper to the unit and powering it on. All you have to do is guide and hold the sander and let it do the sanding work for you. It really doesn’t matter what or where you are sanding, these can help!

With sanders, there are several different sizes and styles to choose from. If you want something versatile, we recommend a circular sander.

Summary
