Our washing machines can get forgotten about when it comes to keeping them clean, because they help us clean our clothing clean and fresh. We assume that they are going to stay clean themselves, however where do you think all the dirt and grime goes from our clothing? That’s right, all that dirt and grime gets trapped in the pipes and filters inside the machine. To keep the machine operating at its full potential it’s important to do a deep cleaning of the machine at least once every 6 months. Over time the soap scum will build up. This will start to smell after a while and mold will start to build up. We can guide you and help you get your washing machine fresh and clean again using all natural cleaning products. No need for any of those harsh cleaning chemical filled products. All you will need is:
- Some white vinegar
- Baking soda
- A spray bottle
- A clean microfibre cloth
- An old toothbrush
Once you have gathered the required products and tools you can get started, first you will need to fill your spray bottle with white vinegar. Spray the inside of the washing machine drum and wipe the entire surface with your clean microfibre cloth. Be certain to wipe every inch of the drum’s surface. The white vinegar will cut through any residue, buildup and grease, it will also remove any hard water stains that might have appeared.
Next we can tackle the rubber seals around the door, these will need to be wiped thoroughly. You will most likely find hair, soap scum and mildew. It may not be pleasant but once this is removed the washer will smell fresh and clean. Be sure to wipe it all away, the cloth should be coming back clean after the last wipe.
Next let’s clean that detergent drawer, pour some white vinegar into the detergent drawer, 2 cups is an ideal amount. Then turn the washing machine on and run a hot cycle. The longest and hottest cycle is best. Once that cycle has completed, open the washer up
and add half a cup of baking soda directly to the washer’s drum.
Run the same cycle again, hottest and longest.
Lastly, spray some of that white vinegar onto a clean microfibre cloth and wipe down the outside and inside of the door. This will remove all watermarks and mildew/ soap scum and leave the door shiny and fresh. You can also use the white vinegar to wipe down the entire front of the washing machine knobs and control window.
That’s it you’re all done, we advise leaving the door for the washing machine open slightly, this allows the machine to fully dry keeping mold and mildew at bay for longer. If this isn’t an option for you you can wipe down the machine with a dry microfibre cloth however be sure to wipe everything till it’s completely dry.
