With applications already open for 2023 applicants, many students intending to pursue higher education are starting to think about submitting admissions. And while the process can be daunting, if you give yourself ample time to complete the application, it can be surprisingly straightforward. Here are the four steps for submitting a university application in the UK.
Determine the Important Dates for Applicants
First, it is a good idea to look up the significant dates for your university application. This will enable you to plan how much time you have for each section of your application. UCAS, the website that manages university applications for higher education in the UK, allows applications for 2023 entry from the 17th of May 2022. These applications can be paid for and sent to universities beginning on the 6th of September when universities can also start making decisions on applications.
Typically, you should aim to be submitting applications before the 25th of January, to give your universities ample time to consider your application. However, applications can still be submitted as late as 30th June. After this, you can still pursue university opportunities for that year via Clearing or UCAS extra.
Determine What and Where You Should Study
University is a huge investment of both your time and finances. As a result, you should try to research as many courses and universities as possible to ensure you make the correct choice. There are also several factors you should have in mind to help you narrow down your choices. Among these is the type of subject you want to study, how the teaching in the course is delivered, the methods of assessment, the university location, and grade requirements.
Register with UCAS
Once you have decided you are going to apply and which courses you will apply to, you should register with UCAS and complete the corresponding questionnaire. Once you have selected undergraduate study, your entry year, and added some basic personal information, you will be able to start your application in earnest.
To complete the application, you will also need to submit information on your residence in the UK, your education history, and your personal circumstances. It is, therefore, a good idea to ensure you have all this information to hand before beginning.
Write Your Personal Statement
Aside from your grades, your personal statement is the main determining factor universities will use to evaluate your application. You should therefore leave plenty of time to ensure you can complete your personal statement to an acceptable standard. The statement should serve as a short essay outlining why you are an ideal candidate for the university course you are applying for.
However, since you can apply to up to 5 different courses at once, this can be tricky. While plenty of tips for how to write a personal statement exist, it is generally advisable to be as personal as possible and not be shy when highlighting previous achievements. You may also want to have someone proofread your essay before submitting it.
