The air conditioner has become a necessity for every household, especially in areas where summer days can be punishing. The ever-reliable AC unit works day and night to ensure a comfortable living space for you and your family. And since it works overtime, you need to take good care of it to avoid costly repairs and extend its lifespan.

The average lifespan of an air-conditioner is around 10-15 years but not all units last this long. Many factors affect the longevity of an AC system including the brand of the unit, local climate, quality of installation, placement, exposure to elements, flooding, sizing, usage, and maintenance.

Here are surefire ways to extend the lifespan of your AC unit and make the most out of your investment.

Work with Qualified Contractor

Hiring experienced AC installers is crucial to maximizing the lifespan of your air conditioner. AC installation is not something you ought to DIY. First of all, you want to determine the ideal size and type of air conditioner for your area. Secondly, you need to identify the best location for both the indoor and outdoor components. Proper sizing and placement are vital for increasing the efficiency of your AC system. Likewise, experienced contractors guarantee that the AC is installed properly. Some contractors even offer extended service warranty to ensure the unit works properly throughout its lifetime.

Keep Air Filter Clean

A clogged air filter causes your AC motor to work harder to circulate cool air throughout your home. Over time, this hastens the AC wear and tear, and increases the likelihood of breakdowns and overheating. Regularly changing or cleaning the air filter can help extend the air conditioner lifespan. And although this is something AC technicians should check on their visits, it is up to every homeowner to keep it clean.

Depending on the type of filter, you may need to replace the disposable filter at least every three months. If the AC is fitted with a reusable filter, you should clean it at least once a month. The more frequently you check the air filter, the longer the life of your AC unit. As an added benefit, a clean air filter makes your air cleaner and safer.

Check the Drain Line

According to AC repair technicians from Hartman, a clogged drain line is a common AC problem. It causes water backflow to the unit and eventually leads to leaks. If not addressed immediately, it can result in mechanical problems and a shorter lifespan. Make sure to check the drain line at least once a year.

Keep it free from blockage by flushing a cup of chlorine bleach and rinsing it with water. Check for any debris or buildup stuck in the drain line. For a clogged drain, you can use a stiff, thin wire brush to clear clogs. If it is clogged by dirt that is hard to remove, call professional help right away to avoid leaks from causing major problems that require more expensive fixes.

Decrease its Workload

As much as possible, you want to help bring down a load of your AC unit. Using your AC along with other home appliances, such as a ceiling fan, can help keep your home cool and optimize your AC. The ceiling fan circulates air better allowing your AC motor to run at a lower power setting. Reducing the load on your AC can help extend its lifespan and cut power bills.

In addition, you can also use other home cooling measures such as thick curtains, reflective window films, smart blinds, and heat-resistant paint. Not only will this keep your AC unit run in top condition for a long time, but it can also save you money on electric bills and costly repairs.

Schedule an Annual Maintenance Check

Lastly, you need to schedule a tune-up with a certified technician at least once a year. Annual preventive maintenance is the best way to increase the longevity of your AC unit. The AC technician performs a complete check, cleans the unit components, and troubleshoots any potential problem. With this annual inspection, you can identify operating problems and fix them before they get worse. While this service often comes for a fee, it is a worthwhile investment to maximize the efficiency of your AC and extend its lifespan.

Like any other equipment, as your AC ages, you’ll notice a decrease in its efficiency especially if it’s not well maintained. But with the tips discussed above, you can keep your air conditioner in the best shape throughout its life.
