Top 7 tourist attractions to visit in New Delhi & Delhi

Delhi, the capital of India is also a historical city, well known for its rich culture, heritage and monuments. There are two different worlds here, namely, Old Delhi & New Delhi, both of which are close by. It is also among the world’s most populous region and a wonderful mixture of modernity with tradition. This place is also the country’s busiest international gateway and a religious centre. It is located on the banks of the sacred river Yamuna, dividing naturally Old Delhi in the east and New Delhi to its west.

There are plenty of things to see and enjoy here including diverse arts & crafts, monuments, performing arts venues, etc. You can also get to taste the varieties of cuisines prepared here. This place also boasts of having several markets and bazaars to cater to the different needs of the shoppers from all walks of life. Chandni Chowk is the most happening place and also the most famous commercial place in the country.   1. Qutub Minar

It is the country’s tallest minaret and also declared a World Heritage Site. It was built during the 12the century. You can climb to its top to enjoy the breathtaking views of the city’s landscape. This 5-storeyed tower is of a height of 70m, covered with beautiful carvings featuring Qutub’s history. Koran inscriptions are engraved on its walls. Red sandstone is sued for the initial three storeys, marble for the fourth and sandstone for the fifth one. There is also a mosque at the tower base named Quwwat-ul-Islamd. Also is present the Alai Minar, a two thousands year old iron pillar including the tombs of Imam Zamin, Allauddin Khilji and Altamish.

  1. Red Fort

Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor had built this beautiful fort in 1648. It was an important seat for the Mughals until 1857. The stunning structure combined with the high red sandstone walls spread over an area of about 2 sq. km. Most of it is crescent shaped, enclosed by a moat to protect the fort from the enemies. The Lahore Gate, the impressive main entrance is named since it faces Lahore city, now in Pakistan. The Delhi Gate is even much grander which the emperor used for ceremonial processions. You can visit the 17th century bazaar named Chhatta Chowk and buy items like silverware, gems, jewellery, souvenirs, silk, foot items, etc. Within the fort is located the NaubatKhana, where musicians were known to have entertained the emperor. You can find several musical instruments here like cymbals, gongs, kettledrums, etc. used in those days. Diwan-i-Am, constructed with white marble is the place where the emperor met his subjects.

  1. Lotus Temple

Bahai’ House of Worship is also referred to as the Lotus Temple since it has 9 sides with a central dome. It is indeed an architectural masterpiece. White marble and concrete is used for its construction. It resembles that of a flower that rises from the surrounding 9 pools, ready to bloom any time. The temple was constructed in 1986 and attracts millions of visitors. Interestingly, there are no outward religious symbols, pictures or idols kept on display.

  1. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib

This 18th century gurudwara is an important worship place for the Sikhs. It features the Sarovar, a magnificent pool located at the very heart of this huge complex. Also popular is its flagpole and gold dome. There is an art gallery, small museum that refers to the Sikh’s history. All visitors can have the Prasad (meal) without any cost offered by the large kitchen at the Gurudwara. You just need to cover your hair and remove your shoes. Also is provided free shoe storage and headscarves.

  1. Jama Masjid

It is considered to be among the largest mosques in the country and Shah Jahan’s final architectural achievement. This beautiful structure was constructed in 1658 and features 4 angled towers, 3 gateways along with two 40m high minarets. White marble and red sandstone has gone into the construction alternated attractively in vertical stripes. Tourists are allowed to climb the south minaret to enjoy Old Dehi’s spectacular views. There is a large central pool where you need to wash your feet before offering prayers. During prayers, non-Muslims are not allowed inside the premises.

  1. India Gate

It resembles that of the Arc de Triomphe located in Paris. This magnificent stone arch was constructed in the memory of Indian soldiers who had laid their lives during the 2nd World War. Beneath the structure burns an eternal flame, while the walls have names of 90,000+ soldiers engraved on it. A shallow dome sized bowl stands on the red stone base. It is filed occasionally with burning oil, especially during important anniversaries. The parkland surrounding the structure is always filled with locals and tourists alike. The structure is illuminated at night time along with the fountains thus offering a fabulous view.

  1. Akshardham

This Hindu temple was constructed recently in 2007 and appears like centuries old. It boasts of having elaborate and intricate carvings, thus attracting devotees and tourists in millions. It features 43m high, stunning main monument having rich carvings of gods, plants, dancers, musicians and animals. It is constructed entirely from marble and sandstone. There are 234 ornate pillars which support the nine domes. There is also a stunning stone tribute made to elephants, considered to be a centrepiece comprising of a massive statue of the beasts weighing about 3,000 ton. The other interests here include a theatre that shows movie about the building’s construction, a large musical fountain named YagnapurushKund. You can also enjoy the 15 minute boat ride, where you can learn about the country’s rich history as well as diverse culture. It is a must visit for all who are religious at heart.
