Around 10 million American households camped for the first time in 2020, and 60% want to try it again, which shows it’s a popular pastime.

Camping is a fantastic way to unwind with loved ones, explore new terrain, and immerse yourself in nature. Perhaps you’ve got a camping trip soon, but the weather forecast says it’s going to rain, which is putting you off.

Sounds familiar? Don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place. Here are five tips for camping in the rain so you don’t miss out on the fun.

  1. Find High Ground

One of the top camping hacks is to pitch your tent on high ground. This is because rain runs downhill, so you don’t want to camp there. As a general rule, find level ground where you can sleep and a gently sloped terrain where you can hang a hammock tarp for cooking and to chill out.

  1. Wear the Right Clothing

If you’re not sure how to camp, know that bringing the right clothes is crucial. Avoid cotton because it soaks through quickly and has zero insulation, which is terrible when you’re caught in a downpour. Instead, buy merino wool for your underwear, socks, and t-shirts.

You should also embrace layers, including a waterproof jacket. But make sure you have another pair so you can change your wet clothes, otherwise, you may catch a cold or suffer from hypothermia.

  1. Lay a Tarp Underneath Your Tent

One of the most underrated pieces of camping equipment is a heavy-duty tarp. Start by laying one underneath your tent as it will keep your back warmer and prevent water from seeping into your tent.

But make sure you have folded the tarp so it doesn’t stick out from underneath the tent. If it does, then the water may hit the material and the water will potentially soak the tent’s fabric.

  1. Be Wary of Wet Terrain

Not sure how to camp in the rain? Then, be mindful of pitching your tent on wet terrain and even walking across it.

Pack hiking boots with grips so you don’t slip on the wet ground. You can also use trekking poles for added stability, which is perfect if you’re going across wet rocks or a stream.

  1. Don’t Forget Entertainment

Aside from waterproof camping supplies, you will also need to bring entertainment, especially if it’s raining all day. Make sure you bring books, playing cards, and board games. Although it’s tempting to watch videos on your tablet, it may get moisture damage, which is irreversible.

Our Camping in the Rain Tips

Hopefully, after reading this article, you know how to deal with camping in the rain.
