It is not always easy to unclog a bathroom sink with the help of a traditional plunger or with a bit of Drano. Dirt, hair, scum, plastic debris, toothpaste, hair gel, and other beauty products can form an impenetrable clog in the bathroom sink. Here we look at some of the different ways you can unclog your bathroom sink without having to call a drain cleaning plumber. All of these methods are both inexpensive and easy to apply to any kind of sink.
None of these methods uses abrasive, poisonous, or environmentally hazardous chemicals.
1. Pour Boiling Water
Pour some water in a large kettle or pot and slowly bring it to a boil until all of the water is boiling. Take an ample amount of the boiling water and slowly pour it down the drain. Make sure that there is no tepid water in the sink when you pour in the boiling water. Let it sit for a while once you pour in the first cup of boiling water.
Pour in another cup of boiling water only if the first cup of boiling water subsides. This will be most effective if there is a lot of hair, soap, or cosmetic products stuck in the bathroom drain. This will also be effective if the sink contains hard water.
2. Baking Soda & Vinegar
This is an old-fashioned way of unclogging drains that is also effective and productive for the bathroom sink. With the help of a measuring cup, mix ⅓ cup of baking soda into ⅓ cup of vinegar. The baking soda will start to sizzle as it comes into contact with the vinegar. Pour the sizzling mixture down the drain.
The sizzling effect of the baking soda and vinegar combination helps to remove the grease and grime stuck on the inside of the pipe. Do not open the faucet for at least an hour after pouring in the mixture. Pour hot water into the drain as this will dilute the effect of the vinegar and baking soda. Your sink will be unclogged in 90 minutes at the most, if not you might need to try a different method.
3. Baking Soda & Salt
Mix ½ cup of baking soda with the same amount of salt and pour the mixture down the drain. Pour in some boiling water on top of the mixture after 15 minutes. All of these substances combined to create a potent chemical reaction in the drain to clear the obstruction.
4. Wire Hanger
This is the most practical way to unclog a bathroom drain without having to call a plumber. This will work best if you have already tried all of the other methods above with no success. Straighten out a wire hanger so that it can be easily pushed down the drain from one end. Remember to make a small hook on the side that goes in first.
Lower the wire hanger down the drain as far as you can and try to catch the grime on the hook of the wire hanger. Remember to wear rubber gloves. Don’t hesitate to use a plunger to help you get rid of stubborn moist debris down the drain.
