Painting the exterior of your home goes far more than actually grabbing a paintbrush and brushing it along your walls. There is a lot of prepping, careful planning, and thoughts that go with it. There are a few things you have to think over. Like what’s the best exterior paint for a house in Denver, CO? How do you actually properly paint the exterior of your home? Why do you have to do it?

That is why there are people who offer exterior house painting near Denver, CO to help you with the whole process, saving you having to prep and paint them on your own.

What Exterior Paint lasts the Longest?

The best paint that you could use for the exterior of your house that would last the longest would have to be acrylic paint. It is known for resisting any damage that is caused by sun exposure and fading, and it could resist any sort of weather damage.

Acrylic could be used on almost any surface, from wood, siding, metal, exterior trims, and masonry and it is a great type of paint that would be able to be resilient against all the temperature fluctuations, making it the perfect paint for people who are living in Denver.

How to Properly Paint Your Home’s Exterior in Denver, CO

1. Prepare all of the materials that you need

You need to gather all of the materials you need for painting the exterior of your home. Here is a list of some of the materials that you may or may not need:

  • Plastic sheeting
  • Ladder
  • Caulk gun
  • Drop cloths
  • Exterior caulk
  • Painter’s tape
  • Spackle knife
  • Paintbrush
  • Medium-grit sanding block
  • Paint sprayer
  • Epoxy filler
  • Pressure washer
  • stain-blocking primer
  • Exterior semi-gloss paint
  • Paint scraper
  • Exterior flat or eggshell paint

2. Pressure-wash your walls

You are going to have to remove any of the dirt and the dust that has built up on the exterior of your home. You could use a pressure washer so that you would have the best coverage. Work yourself from top to bottom. Using a pressure wash would help make sure you clean the walls properly, and in a controlled manner.

3. Repair any of the damages on the surface of your walls

Go around the house and look at all of the damaged surfaces that you have on the walls. Look at the wood, metal, sidings, stucco, and masonry, and apply epoxy fillers on all of the cracks and holes so that when you paint on it, it would look smooth. After you put in the fillers, get the sandpaper and sand the area once it is dry.

4. Remove any of the loose paint that you could see

If the exterior of your house is already painted, then you should examine around for any paint that is loose or chipped while you are walking around. Once you have spotted them, get the drop cloth, place it on the ground, and then use the scraper for paint (or get a sanding block if you don’t have one) and start removing any of the chipped or loose paint that you see.

5. Caulk the trim

If you notice that there are any gaps that you see between the house and the trim on the windows and doors, group a caulk and a caulk gun so that you could fill in all of the gaps that you could see. If your house is composed of heterogeneous materials, you could use caulk to seal the seams where the various components meet. From brick to siding.

6. If there are any stains, prime them

As time passes, there may be stains on the exterior of your home. You could apply a stain-blocking priming coat using a paintbrush so any stains and wood knots would disappear and it would be easier to paint over and the color of the paint in that area would stay even.

7. Cover the doors, lights, and windows

Once you are done making sure that you got all of the stains and the cracks, and everything is ready to go, go get the plastic sheets and use them to cover the windows, doors, and all of the lighting fixtures outside your house to make sure you don’t put any unwanted paint on it when you are painting.

8. Paint the exterior of your home

Now that you have them covered and you have already prepped the walls, then it’s time to paint the exterior of your house.

To start, you could start losing the paint (eggshell or flat exterior paint) into your paint sprayer and apply one or two coats of paint to your house. The number of coats you would put would depend on how intense the hue of the paint you are using.

Start at the top and work your way down, overlapping each stroke by 8 inches in a calm and steady manner. You could add primer before you start painting, especially if you are changing the color of the wall entirely.

9. Paint the trim and the doors

After you have painted the walls of the exterior of your home, it’s safe to remove the plastic sheet that you have put on the doors, lighting fixtures, and windows. Then you could add 2 coats of semigloss paint on any of the woodworks and the doors. Once you are done, you could remove the drop cloths you still have on.

Benefits of Painting Your Home in Denver

There are a lot of benefits that you could get when you paint your home, both interior and exterior-wise. It could help set the mood in the room, make it look more modern, protect and even prevent any further damage in your home, keep moisture away from the foundation of your house, improve the quality of air circulating around your home, and even make the interior of your home more beautiful.

When you are planning on selling your home and putting it on the market, this would increase the overall value of your home, pull in more potential buyers, sell in the market so much faster, and you would even get more than your asking price.
