The history of engineering is fascinating for a science enthusiast. This institution combines creativity and practicality into a single narrative. From ancient pyramids by Imhotep to modern snowboards, feats of engineering are magnificent. It’s remarkable to learn that civil engineering goes back to the stone age. And that’s just one branch of modern-day engineering. Dozens of such units exist today, and each of them has contributed to the advancement of science. Electrical engineering and robotics are probably the most evolving technologies in the 21st century. Let’s discuss some of the well-known and lucrative engineering fields you can select to study in 2020.

Engineering interdisciplinarydegrees for 2020

  • Aviation & Aerospace: This field deals with designing airplanes, space-crafts, satellites, and related machinery. These engineers study, research, test, and finalize the construction of flying machines. You can study astronautical engineering or specialize in aerodynamics. This relatively young field of study seeks growth as man contemplate conquering Mars.
  • Biomedical Engineering: This field of study combines medicine and biology with engineering and mathematics. Biomedical engineers study medical monitoring devices and diagnostic machinery used in hospitals. You can specialize in the manufacturing of implants and prosthetics. This interdisciplinary allows you to work for human health improvement.
  • Chemical Engineering: In this dynamic field, you turn raw elements into useful products via different chemical methods. They help in the manufacturing of synthetic edible, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical items. It involves various sorts of complex chemical processes, suitable for students well-versed in their chemistry lessons.
  • Civil & Mechanical Engineering: Civil engineers focus on large-scale projects, while mechanical engineers build small-scale machines. You can learn more about top-ranking universities, but first, knowingthe difference between the two disciplines is essential to understand.
  • Electrical Engineering: It is the study of electricity and electronic items. This field works by collaborating with computer science and software engineering. This auspicious discipline gave the world wonders such as radio and television. Today, electrical engineers work with motors, batteries, and generators. Embedded technology falls directly under its horizon.

  • Environmental Engineering: Environmental engineers strive to reduce pollution and create structure in an eco-friendly way. They fight global warming by utilizing renewable energy sources and building ecosystems. Sustainability is slowly becoming the norm. Environmental engineers propagate sustainable practices in their institutions.
  • Industrial & Systems Engineering: The development of logistics and industrial resources fall under industrial engineering. This discipline requires know-how in project management. They make industrial systems more efficient hence they find work in almost every industry. They deal with not just designing a building but also the required equipment and workers.

  • Marine Engineering: As the name suggests, this field deals with the construction of marine vessels. They include ships, yachts, boats, submarines, and their internal components. As a marine engineer, you’ll work in collaboration with naval architects. You’ll study not just the development but also the proper maintenance of these vessels.
  • Nanoengineering: It deals with designing and building components with nanotechnology. It has vast industrial, military, and medical applications. Engineers have constructed certain nano-robots that can perform surgical functions deemed too complicated for human surgeons.
  • Nuclear Engineering: This field encompasses the nuclear processes used to harness nuclear power. These engineers deal with fission and fusion reactions. They also study their significant applications such as nuclear reactors, weapons, and power plants. One may specialize in nuclear safety or nuclear waste disposal.
  • Petroleum Engineering: Detection and extraction of oil from deep down the earth require particular engineering expertise. These professionals study crude oil, hydrocarbons, natural gas, and carbon emissions. The world depends on oil and gas production;hence, this field will be staying relevant for a few decades.
  • Power & Energy Engineering: The production and distribution of power generated by machines is something we deal with here. Power engineers consider the discipline of power electronics in this field. They can also work with nuclear/renewable energy sources. This branch of engineering finds its applications in related industries as well.
  • Robotics: This industry is growing faster than expected since the beginning of the century. The influence of artificially-intelligent machines is visible everywhere. Their design and functions have revolutionized the world as we see it. Engineers don’t just build Stars Wars-inspired robots in this field but also processing machines responsible for their functioning.

  • Structural Engineering: Some may call it a sub-branch in civil engineering. These engineers deal with making and studying load-bearing structures. They focus on the safety of the people and the aesthetics of the building in construction. And it is also one of the most sought-after jobs this year.

Conclusion

Engineers have always been an essential part of human civilization. This profession doesn’t seem to decrease its popularity. Quite the contrary, experts believe engineering will grow in importance with time. As per BLS, American engineers will increase from 1.68 million to 1.82 million by 2026. The field of engineering allows you to become an innovator and bring innovation to the whole world. Engineer graduates are to acquire high-income jobs after completing their studies. And there are more than enough branches of engineering to choose from in the modern age. This field is never void of interest and always keeps your mind alive with constant challenges and adventures.
