Sun tunnel installations are tubular fixtures installed in your home to generate natural light and value to the structure of your home.

What Are Sun Tunnels?

If your home has a room that lacks natural light or requires a lot of artificial lighting, installing a sun tunnel may be the solution. A sun tunnel is a tubular skylight meant to capture natural light and bring it into your home. This feature is a unique option for instituting daylight into spaces that would otherwise be dark during the day, such as a closet or interior bathroom, and could not accommodate a window.

Sun tunnels add overall value to a home. They offer many options for accessories like solar night lights and diffusers and are typically easier to install compared to regular skylights.

Tubular Skylight

An additive benefit of sun tunnels is their versatility since they can fit where other skylights cannot as well as being the less expensive option. They easily fit in between rafters and the attics which lessens the installation time especially if your roof already has a structure that aligns with the sun tunnel.

Benefits Sun Tunnels

There are many benefits to adding skylights or sun tunnels to your home. It can improve the design and value of your home and even enhance your mental health, since you will be exposed to more natural sunlight and less artificial light throughout the day.

Home Value

Not only does a sun tunnel improve your mood, but it attracts potential buyers. The value of your home will increase with the installation of a sun tunnel. A sun tunnel decreases the need for using artificial lights during the day. This can lower electricity costs while adding bright, beautiful natural light into a space.

Natural Light

A major benefit of sun tunnels is the amount of natural light and solar energy that it generates. It can bring light to poorly lit areas without direct access to an outside wall. There are plenty of benefits to having natural light within a space. For one, it reduces the need for artificial light. It can also help warm the space through the sun’s natural rays and even provide sunlight to indoor plants. The tubular fixtures are a great way to be eco-friendly and brighten your spaces while being energy-efficient. Sun tunnels use 100% of renewable energy from the sun for those who are environmentally conscious.

Easy Installation

Sun tunnels are known for being easier to install compared to skylights and other windows. Oftentimes, sun tunnels can be fully installed in half a day or less from cutting the hole in the roof to installing the flexible or rigid tunnels. However, the length of time will also depend on the state of your roof and the accessibility of installing the sun tunnel on both the interior and exterior areas of your home.

Different Types of Sun Tunnels

There are two types of sun tunnels that you can install in your home, rigid and flexible. Flexible sun tunnels are inserted if there are things blocking the way of the space required for the fixture. Rigid sun tunnels are when there is no obstruction and the tunnel can be easily placed from the ceiling to the roof.

Rigid tunnels are recommended especially if the pathway is unobstructed. It is believed that the lighting is better, offers brighter white light, and is less expensive. It is also more sustainable for the accessories if you were to choose to add any.

Decide if Sun Tunnels Are for You

Deciding whether you should install sun tunnels in your home is a personal preference and should be chosen depending on your home, style, expectations, and budget. If your home cannot sustain the installation of a sun tunnel, then it is most likely not the best fit. If you believe that you have areas in your home that need more natural light and you want to add a unique touch to your design, then a sun tunnel is highly recommended.

Contact an experienced skylight contractor who will work with your budget, give you a consultation, and has the sun tunnels you want available for you. For homeowners seeking small renovations like this, working with experienced contractors is always suggested.
