Welding is very important in our society, but we only have about 400,000 welders in the United States.
If you’re thinking about becoming a welder because of the great benefits, you’ll have to decide what type of welding you want to focus on.
There are several different types of welding, but we can help you decide which one is the best for your project or profession!
MIG Welding
The MIG welding process uses a welding gun that has electrodes consistently channeled into it. The welder will be able to use a trigger to let the electrodes run into whatever they’re working on.
Between the electrode and the material you’re working with, an electric arc will start to grow. The material will heat until it reaches a melting point where it can join.
To do this type of welding, you’ll need some supplies like steels, a shielding gas, and a welding gun.
TIG Welding
Another popular welding type is TIG welding. This has more versatility than MIG welding. However, it might be more difficult, especially for beginners.
You should find a welder who is skilled specifically in this type of welding if that’s what you need.
To do this type of welding, the welder will have to use both hands. One hand feeds the rod, and then the other hand has to hold the torch.
This type can weld common materials like nickel and copper alloys, cobalt, aluminum, and steel.
Stick Welding
Welding started back in the 1930s, and stick welding was the most commonly used method back then. It was really easy to do and even easier to learn.
Some people still use it today as it doesn’t cost as much to do. However, the welds might not be as neat and organized as some of the methods above would offer. The welder will have to clean up after this one due to the amount of splatter from this method.
You can use this type of welding outdoors because it doesn’t need gas to work like the other ones. Because of all the materials, it works on, you also can use it to repair used equipment.
Flux-Cored Arc Welding
Lastly, flux-cored arc welding is similar to using the MIG method. Instead of using solid wire, you’ll need a wire that’s similar to a tube.
When it comes to using this technique, it is great because it won’t create as much waste, which means there won’t be as much clean up after you’re done. This method also doesn’t need any shield for gas because there are a lot fewer fumes with this type of welding.
