While you could get started selling on Amazon without a professional seller’s account, if you are taking it seriously, you want to get one. Therefore, you want to pay the fee for a seller’s account to avoid that restriction.

2. Figure Out How You Want To Sell

There are ultimately two main ways to sell on Amazon as a third-party seller.

Fulfillment by Merchant (FBM)

One of the ways is by selling Fulfillment by Merchant (FBM). If you are looking to sell on Amazon’s marketplace but you want to handle the fulfillment, you can do so as an FBM seller. The benefits of selling FBM is the ability to control the entire process from start to finish to ensure that you are doing it the way you intended. However, the main benefit is being able to save money on fees. While you will still have to pay Amazon a commission for giving you the sale, you won’t have to pay the variable pick and pack fees and the various other associated fees with Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). The downsides to selling through FBM have to do with the fact that you will have to manage shipping and returns which can be very time-consuming. Likewise, you have to worry about handling and storing your own inventory which might not be viable for those with bulky products.

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)

The other way you can sell on Amazon is by shipping your products to Amazon fulfillment centers and having them store your inventory and fulfill the orders for you. This allows you to get the Amazon FBA designation on the product listings which means Amazon Prime members will be able to get free 2-day shipping on your products. This alone can be beneficial because it is proven that Amazon FBA customers are generally more willing to pay a higher price to use this benefit. Another benefit is the ability to avoid having to handle your own storage and the ability to hand off returns and customer service issues to Amazon directly. The downsides are the higher fees you will be paying for these privileges.

Seller Fulfilled Prime (SFP)

The third option you have available as a third-party seller is the ability to sell with the prime designation and ship the products yourself. This is only a program that you can apply and get approved for if you have met the threshold for high performance. Amazon tracks your performance as a seller and you need to meet specific thresholds for various criteria to sell with this.
