How to Prepare for the Movers

Are you planning to move?

Moving is a long process. In order for it to be successful, you need to be well prepared. From the relocation planning to boxing everything up, you may forget to make adequate plans for the actual movers.

Since moving can be stressful, it’s in your best interest to start off on the right foot, says KRS Management in Raleigh. Ensure you are prepared well ahead of time. Doing important tasks last minute will only lead to confusion and additional stress.

Luckily, in this article, you’ll learn 7 tips on how to prepare for the movers and make the process a breeze for everyone involved.

1. Pack your Stuff Properly

Packing is one of the most obvious and essential steps to a move.

It’s a good idea to start by getting some packing supplies. Here are the supplies we recommend having on hand:

  • Permanent markers
  • Packing tape
  • Stretch plastic wrap
  • Padded wrapping paper
  • Moving blankets
  • Moving boxes
  • Packing paper
  • Bubble wrap

Also, packing doesn’t have to be done alone. Seek the help from your friends and family. If you aren’t interested in packing yourself, you can also hire a professional. With this option, you won’t have much to worry about!

2. Label the Boxes

If you choose to do the packing yourself, then make sure to label everything properly. Imagine yourself in your new home, surrounded by piles of unlabeled boxes. This would be taxing and stressful.

By labeling your boxes, you’ll know where everything is. This will make unpacking the moving truck and unpacking each individual box much easier.

3. Clean the Home

This is especially important if you are currently living in a rental home. Remember, you have a contract to uphold. Generally, property owners require tenants to leave their rental home in the same condition as they found it.

If you fail to return the property in its initial condition, you risk losing part or even all of your security deposit.

So, a few weeks prior to your moving date, commit to cleaning your home. Doing this advance will ensure that you aren’t scrambling last minute. You want to clean each room and all the closets and drawers.

This would also be a good time to declutter. Throw away any old, unused or damaged products. You may also choose to sell or donate items that are in good condition.

4. Plan for your Pets

Don’t forget to plan for your pets! Before the movers arrive, plan what will happen with your pets. Here are some ideas:

  • Ensure that your pet is up-to-date with all shots and medical needs by having a vet assess your pet.
  • Make sure you have enough medications to get your pet through the first few months in the new house. Medications may include eye drops, flea and tick medication, and heartworm protection.
  • Try hiring a pet sitter to watch your pet on the moving day. Many pets don’t handle moving to a new location well.
  • Have a pet bag ready. In this bag, pack all of your pets’ essentials. The essentials may include things like food, extra water bowls, blankets, leashes, bones, toys, poop bags, kitty litter and scooper, treats, and medications.

5. Hire a Babysitter for your Kids

If you have young kids, you may find it difficult to have them present when you’re trying to move. Trying to watch your children while planning for and coordinating the move can be very distracting. So, whether it’s a friend, a family member, a daycare or a nanny, make sure you have someone dedicated to looking after your small children.

This will not only help prevent accidents, but it may also help keep your little one’s schedule of naps and feedings on track.

6. Gather Important Paperwork

With everything going on, it’s relatively easy for important documents to become lost or damaged during a move.

Here are some of the most important documents that you should gather and keep in a safe place:

  • Medical records
  • Auto insurance information
  • Birth certificates
  • Driver’s licenses
  • Passports
  • Mortgage documents
  • High-value inventory forms
  • Bill of landing

Once you have all of these documents in one place, secure them in a container that is lockable. For instance, you may choose to use a sturdy filing cabinet or a fire-resistant safe.

7. Prepare Refreshments

On the D-day, movers will be going back and forth between your home and the truck while carrying heavy items. They will be repeating this same action upon arrival at your new home. For this reason, you should prepare some refreshments for them. This can help boost their wellbeing and stamina.

Bottom Line

A successful move starts with a smart plan. By making use of these tried-and-tested 7 tips, you’ll be fully prepared for the moving day and you’ll save yourself a lot of stress and headaches.
