Once you’ve been able to experience a great Bangkok holiday, it would not be a surprise if you end up wanting to buy land for sale in Thailand. After all, this beautiful Southeast Asian country is one of the friendliest places in the world for both tourists and retirees.

One of the many attractions that keep people coming back for more is definitely the incomparable Thai cuisine offered up in high-end restaurants and street-side stalls alike. Once you’ve settled into your new home, you might then want to experiment with Thai cooking yourself, and to do that, you’ll need access to the classic herbs that give dishes that extra boost of deliciousness. So, here are some of the essential herbs in Thai food and simple tips for how you can grow them.

  • Horapha, commonly known as Thai basil, has a sweet flavour that somewhat resembles anise. You can grow it from either cuttings or seeds and plant it in well-draining, consistently moist soil. It needs to be exposed to the sun for at least six hours a day so it can grow well, but it can tolerate some shade.
  • Krapow or holy basil has a flavour that’s peppery, spicy, and pungent, which makes it an excellent addition to stir-fried dishes. It thrives best under the same growing conditions as horapha.
  • Takrai, also called lemongrass, is well-known for its lemony, citrusy flavour and aroma. You can grow it using a single stalk by placing and leaving it in water until roots appear, then you can plant it in soil. It can grow into quite a large plant if exposed to a lot of sun and moisture.
  • Kha or galangal is an aromatic herb with a sharp, sort of piney taste that’s similar to ginger. Select a piece of fresh galangal root with a shoot growing out of it then plant it in the soil. It prefers to grow in a location with a high degree of humidity under partial shade.
  • Makrut or kaffir lime has leaves with an intense aroma that’s similar to citrus. You can grow it in a pot with a small cutting or plant that gets a lot of sunshine throughout the day.
  • Pak chee or cilantro has a bright and fresh flavour that can liven up any dish. It can be a bit tricky to grow in a hot climate since the heat makes it go to seed quickly. So, make sure to keep its soil moist by placing it in a shady spot. To prolong production, harvest the outer leaves regularly.
  • Prik kee noo suan are Thailand’s potent bird’s eye chillies. You can grow them from seeds planted in well-draining soil under full sun since they love warmth. Harvest the chillies once you see they’ve turned red and ripe.
  • Saranae or mint is often used in salads because of its cool and refreshing taste. Since it’s invasive, it’s best to grow it in a pot using some cuttings. Keep the soil moist and place it in partial shade.
  • Ton hom or spring onion is an essential garnish in a lot of dishes. You can grow it using some seeds or by planting the white ends in water until they grow roots, then you can transfer them to soil.
