Factors That Are Often Overlooked When Moving House

Moving house is a fun prospect as it means that you are moving into somewhere new that you can call home; however, that doesn’t mean to say that the process itself is enjoyable. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Moving house is widely considered to be one of the most stressful events that you can go through in your life, even if the move is to somewhere you prefer and is for the better. Regardless of whether you are a frequent mover or if this is your first time, the fact is, there are a lot of aspects that come with moving house that a lot of people forget to do. Trying to remember these can be a struggle and can contribute to the overall project being a bit overwhelming.

Don’t let stress dominate your experience. Sure, feeling some stress is to be expected throughout, but that doesn’t mean it has to take up the entire process. In order to stay on top of everything and ensure you don’t miss some of the crucial points, this checklist is going to tick off all of the essentials that you will need to keep in mind.

(If Renting) Hand in Your Notice

If you’re moving from a rented property, then you need to ensure that you have handed in your notice and made it clear to your landlord that you will be leaving. The notice period will vary from property to property, but it should have been clearly stated in your tenancy agreement from when you first moved in. Sometimes it might be one month, sometimes two, but it’s important to find this out because when moving, you will want to have some idea of a budget in mind, and this will obviously be affected if you have a couple more months of rent that you need to pay. If your notice period is longer than expected, but you have been in the property for longer than a year, you may be in a contract that has a break clause, which could make moving out a lot easier.

Plan For All the Logistics

It isn’t until you start packing that you realize just how much stuff there will be that you need to move. This will come in the form of standard items such as furniture and then smaller productsscattered all across your house. You should make a note of everything that you want to move and then have a clear indication in your head as to how you’re going to move it. Some of these moves are going to be harder than others but regardless of what it is, there will be businesses on hand that can help. For instance, if you have more than one vehicle and need to move a car to your new property, you will be able to do so using a vehicle home delivery service such as that provided by Acertus.

Think About the Kids and Pets

If it’s not just you involved in the move and you also need to cater to your children and pets, you will need to do some planning for their benefit. This will involve talking to the school about potential placements, or if you do not have to change schools, they will need to be aware of your new address so that correspondence can be sent there.

When it comes to pets, you are going to need to make sure you know how you are going to move them as this could be another logistic that could cause trouble. Consider the date that you are planning on moving and then, if you need to, book the kennel far in advance if necessary or see if a family member or friend will be able to look after them for a period of time.

Communicate With Your Friends and Family

You are going to want to make it clear to your family friends that you’re moving and tell them where it is you’re moving to. They will instinctively ask for help, and you should feel comfortable taking them up on their offer if everything is starting to seem overwhelming. Simply having another pair of eyes to glance over some paperwork, another pair of hands to pack, or someone to help carry boxes will go a long way when it comes to reducing your overall stress levels.

Keep Your Valuables Close to You

There are a lot of important documents and paperwork that you are going to have when moving, and it is important that you keep all of these in a safe place when heading out to a new property. You should have a designated bag or file for all of these important documents that you really don’t want to lose. These important documents include the likes of:

  • Tax Paperwork
  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Passport
  • Driving License

The Day Before the Big Move

It’s normal to feel a bit of pressure on the day before a big move, but you are able to ease this with a few simple steps. If you make sure your phone is charged so that you’re able to contact people in emergencies, also, if you are able to check all of your essentials and confirm a time with your removal company, the night before will be a lot less of a stressful and pressured time for you.

Conclusion

Moving house can be a very exciting time, especially if you are finally making the jump from rented properties to somewhere that you can finally call home. That being said, the process can be an incredibly daunting and stressful one, too, as there is a lot that will need to get done before the big day. The tasks at hand are going to vary depending on where you are moving and what you are moving there; however, generally speaking, if you are stuck on advice for moving to a new property, then the above list is a great place to start as a reference point.
