Blemishes on our skin are fairly common and can affect most people regardless of gender and age. While most blemishes are harmless to our body, many people may want to get rid of them purely for cosmetic purposes. But what exactly are blemishes, and can you stop actually stop them?

Below, we’ll discuss the common types of blemishes that affect people worldwide and how you can stop blemishes from forming again.

Understanding the 4 types of blemishes

Although there are many types of blemishes that affect people worldwide, these are the 4 most common blemishes that most people suffer from.

Acne

Acne is a blemish caused by the overproduction of oil in your oil glands. This causes clogged pores that turn into acne when left unattended. Other factors such as frequent exposure to dust, hormonal imbalance, and bad skin cleaning routines may also affect how often you get acne.

Acne conditions may include skin problems like blackheads, whiteheads, cystic pimples, papules, pustules, and nodules.

Age spots

As we age, a skin condition known as age spots or liver spots will begin to appear. Typically affecting people aged 40 and above, this is a skin condition caused by overexposure to the sun. As our skin’s pigment cells become overly active, this leaves behind this harmless blemish known as age spots. They are usually light brown as they begin to form and will darken over time.

Melasma

Another form of blemish is known as melasma. This differs from age spots, although it can be difficult to categorize in the beginning. Like age spots, melasma is also caused by overexposure to the sun without protection. It can affect anyone of any age and typically affects larger areas of the skin like the forehead.

Birthmarks

Finally, there are birthmarks. Also called beauty marks, birthmarks can come in various forms including a mole or brown patches across your skin. Birthmarks are a result of our blood vessels not forming properly during birth and occurs naturally. Do note, however, that not all moles are considered birthmarks.

Tips on how to stop blemishes

In the past, blemishes were considered a skin imperfection. However, many people choose to call them beauty marks today, as they can be uniquely beautiful to everyone. While blemishes are generally harmless to our bodies, many people may find ways to stop them from happening. Here are some tips on how you can treat blemishes too.

Wash your face frequently

If you’re suffering from acne of any form, the best way to stop them is by keeping it clean. Specially formulated face washes can help penetrate deep into your pores, cleaning out any impurities that cause clogged pores. For a natural clean, you can also use products that contain apple cider vinegar to help keep acne at bay.

Don’t go in the sun without sun protection

Unprotected exposure to the sun can cause premature age spots and melasma. As such, it’s recommended to always use sunscreen to keep your skin protected from the sun.

Use topical creams sparingly

Over-the-counter creams may often help to treat and stop various blemishes. For example, creams with benzoyl peroxide are often used to stop acne problems. You could also visit a dermatologist for creams that require prescriptions like cortisone that can help lighten age and melasma spots.

Conclusion

If you’ve been affected by any types of these blemishes, it can be heartening to know that you’re not fighting this alone. With the rise in modern technology and the readily available beauty industry to help boost your confidence against blemishes, we’re sure you’ll be able to combat these skin problems eventually.
