Motorcycles are roughly twice as fuel-efficient as cars, so aside from the fun they provide, they prove to be an economical method of transportation.

Despite the favorable economics of driving around, the initial costs of buying a motorcycle can be high. There is a lot to consider before making the purchase.

Below are some important tips on what to know before buying a motorcycle. Read on to make the most informed decision possible when it comes to purchasing a motorcycle.

Choosing a Motorcycle

Before you decide on a motorcycle, it is important to have an idea of what you want to use the motorcycle for. That way, you will be able to guide yourself to the motorcycle that best fits your needs. There are many different motorcycle styles out there, but here are a few to consider.

Touring

If you want to use your motorcycle to tour new sites, landscapes, and cities, you’ll want to consider a touring motorcycle, which provides many of the comforts of a car.

Sport

If you are already a seasoned rider and are looking for speed, a bike made for sport might be for you. Some can reach speeds of 200 miles per hour, and these bikes boast quick acceleration, easy breaking, and great maneuverability.

Electric

If you do a lot of city driving, an electric motorcycle might be for you. They’re fast, easy to use, and very efficient. They work in a similar way to electric cars.

How Much Does a Motorcycle Cost?

Once you decide on a motorcycle, you’ll need to start considering price. Motorcycle prices vary greatly but expect prices between $5,000 and $10,000.

When considering what to know before buying a motorcycle, you will also need to factor in insurance costs. Age, location, population density, and theft rate are all involved in determining insurance rates. Make sure to explore different insurance options to get the best rate possible.

The price of motorcycle gear can also add up, so you should account for approximately $800 to $1,000 to invest in appropriate gear. This includes protective clothing and a helmet.

Maintenance costs can add up as well, so it’s important to set aside a budget for that. Tires, spark plugs, chains, and so on will need to be replaced now and then, and the costs can accumulate up depending on the work you need to have done.

You will also need to have the oil changed periodically. The cost of maintenance depends on the motorcycle and what it requires, but you can expect to invest at least $1,000 yearly, give or take.

Accidents happen, so if you find yourself in a pickle, you may also need a good motorcycle accident lawyer to help you out of a bad situation.

What to Know Before Buying a Motorcycle: The Summary

Now that you have learned about what to know before buying a motorcycle, it’s time to put these motorcycle tips to good use. Schedule some test drives, shop around for insurance, invest in some protective gear, and you’ll be ready to go before you know it.
