Few stages of life are as exciting as moving off to college and falling in love. If you’ve recently become a college student and have begun a romantic relationship, odds are that you’re having a great time making new memories and looking forward to the future. However, as much as you may believe you’re well on your way to a fantastic future, it’s important to understand that it’s normal to face challenges when it comes to balancing your coursework and romantic relationship. For a few tips on how to balance love with academics, read on.

Defining Goals and Boundaries

With so many exciting life changes, it’s never a bad idea to set a list of clear goals and boundaries as you enter a romantic relationship during your college years. Even if you’re dating your high school sweetheart, the addition of college is bound to change things, and it’s never a bad time to reflect on your own wants and needs outside of your relationship.

Perhaps you’ve spent time searching zodiac and astrology information sites to find answers to questions like “Are Virgo and Pisces compatible?” or “Can polar opposites stick together?” Maybe you’ve come to realize that a person you were good friends with is the right life partner for you. Knowing you’re with someone special is only one step in balancing your relationship with college studies. Being with the right person, especially when it’s new, can actually make it difficult to concentrate on your own goals. Naturally, you likely want to spend all your free time with that person. This can lead to skipping class, having a hard time keeping up, or even losing friends on top of falling behind.

One great way to prevent the issues that can come along with juggling a relationship with a college program is to remind yourself of your own goals outside of your relationship. It’s important to remember that your partner fell in love with all of you, including your goals. In a healthy relationship, you should both be there to remind each other of passions, interests, and goals. Doing so will only make your relationship stronger.

Scheduling

Whether you hope to become a professional college counselor or a lawyer, it’s also important to not be so focused on your own goals that you forget about making your partner a priority. The key is making time for each other by scheduling breaks for quality time together where you can build on your relationship without the distraction of coursework. Start with an honest conversation about a schedule that works best for you both. Then, stick to it, the same way you do your syllabus. Expect your partner to do the same in return.

Working as a Team

As someone in a relationship, it’s smart to recognize the importance of balance in your life. Make a deal with your partner to keep each other in check when it comes to the ways you’re both organizing your days to include work and play. If you’re struggling to find this balance, consider reaching out to a family therapist for a few sessions of couples therapy to get you back on track and redefine mutual and solo goals.

The truth is that the value of a healthy romantic relationship can come with the perk of having someone who cares about your overall happiness around. Being each other’s best supporter but also making room for individuality is important. At the end of the day, love is a powerful thing. Having someone to share an emotional connection with can be a great resource for any college student. Whether your romantic relationship is just for a season of your life or if you’ve found someone you want to fully commit to, being honest with your partner about your needs and goals and making your relationship a priority are great ways to, at the same time, achieve your academic goals.
